I hate so say it, but they are lame.
..I mean really bad. There are a few that are fine, but the majority have got to go.

Participants in the study were presented with images of real faces, smiley face emoticons and meaningless sets of characters. The research team found that the brain reacted in the same way to the emoticons as to pictures of faces, but only when the “:-)” characters were in the correct order. Switching them around to “(-:” didn’t elicit the same response. The signal that’s activated when our brains see a face is known as the N170 event-related potential

When we first broached the Great Smiley Debate a few weeks ago, the question was whether or not a dash-as-nose was appropriate, necessary, or a bastardization of the simple purity of two dots paired with a gentle curve. But a new, equally contentious controversy emerged in the Kinja discussion: Should the parenthesis open towards the left or the right?

Whichever configuration you supported, it ultimately seemed like a question of personal preference. There are no right or wrong answers when it comes to communicating through cheeky punctuation marks. Right? Wrong!

Nor are all smileys created equal. The neural reaction in the study changed significantly depending on whether or not people were looking at the most familiar version of the smiley emoticon. While the traditional Smile and :-) symbols triggered the same face-specific mechanisms used for processing actual faces, the non-standard (-: did not. (If you've ever had an argument over whether the reverse smiley is valid, feel free to point to this study as evidence that even our brains reject them as abominations.)

A mouthguard is a protective device for the mouth that covers the teeth and gums to prevent and reduce injury to the teeth, arches, lips and gums. A mouthguard is most often used to prevent injury in contact sports, as a treatment for bruxism or TMD, or as part of certain dental procedures, such as tooth bleaching. Depending on application, it may also be called a mouth protector, mouth piece, gumshield, gumguard, nightguard, occlusal splint, bite splint, or bite plane.
