| | My mom, on ambien, was doing (okay trying to do) cartwheels in the front yard and trying to get us to play basketball with her at 1:00AM. She also ate an entire 10" carrot cake, but sadly that was not an isolated incident. The night eating with amnesia is why she eventually switched to kolodipin(sp?) It was a welcome change for us all. |

I was mortified. Believe it or not that was not the demise of the relationship. He should have run off scarred that second. Anyway, my mom has no memory of the event. I wish I could say the same. |
Ha ha ha! That's great. I love your mom. |

| | skyla wrote: | Because of a series of events with my kids we are currently seeing a specialist in Portland to diagnose Osteogenesis Imperfecta (Brittle Bone Disease). My daughter was born with amniotic band syndrome, which left her with just 1 foot. Then when Hunter was 3 months old he broke his leg. DHS came and wouldn't let us leave the hospital with our kids, our Ped was literally throwing up begging them to give her time to figure this out because she knew we didn't abuse our kids. We were run through the ringer, theatened, seperated and questioned. In the end, we left with them late that night because a specialist phoned in from out of town and said that there was a small chance he had this disorder.
I have had 8 broken bones (mostly in elementary school), we have some other random family history factors, and it turns out that OI is a hereditary collogen disorder just like Hannah's ABS. We belive there is a connection. In the end they told us that the test for OI is unreliable and he could test negative and still actually have it, which would put DHS on our backs again. When we save enough money I will travel to the NIH and have the test myself. That may give us some answers for Hunter. So for now we are just waiting and watching and spending evenings scouring the internet for specialists who see a connection between Hannahs ABS and Hunter's break.
It's indescribable stress watching an active 2 year old throw himself off of the couch, always wondering when the next break will be and worrying that DHS will swoop in and claim the need to take my kids. There are so many stories of kids with OI ending up in foster care until they could get a diagnosis. It's really scarry. |
Wow girl. I can totally understand your worry. I used to work in foster care, but I like to think of myself as a reasonable person and I would definitely take medical history into account before ripping children away from there families. However, I can understand the flip side because I have seen children who have been starved by the parents and, even worse, pre-teen girls pimped out by their parents in order to support drug habits.
I hope a specialist gets to the bottom of this. It definitely sounds like OI is the case in hand, but I'm a neutral 3rd party and therefore am able to judge with a more level head. |

yeah. Ever since David got my phone number, I have gotten some pretty crazy text messages and voice mails in the dead of night. It also doesn't help with a 3 hr time change. So 11 p.m. for David is 2 a.m. for me. (but I still love him)
As for my personal illness, I had a serious battle with depression that nearly spiraled out of control in 2002. The real problem was that I didn't have depression, I actually have bipolar, but if it is not treated with the correct medication, it will get worse rather than better. My problems with bipolar are pretty typical in that I can either be extremely depressed or very manic. I put myself in a lot of debt prior to a proper diagnosis. I still have a big problem with paranoia and I have problems with insomnia but I am currently taking Seroquel with great results.
I also have migraines. I will typically get 2 or 3 a month. I take medication every day that is supposed to prevent it (Topamax). It basically does it's job because I was having almost daily migraines prior to being placed on this medication. An added benefit is that this drug is a mood stabilizer. I even had a migraine one time that is called an "atypical migraine" or a "hemiplegic migraine". It looks like a stroke and caused loss of strength on the right side of my body which lasted for a week. This happened in 2006. I was not ready to live with using a cane for the rest of my life and was very glad when the symptoms resolved.
That's pretty much it for me. There was a time when my Dr thought I had a heart condition because I did have 3 slightly leaking valves on an Echo. I did one year of cardio work out and reversed that however. After that though I was having frequent chest pain and fatigue so I had to go through a complete cardiac work-up and even ended up hospitalized for a week before it was determined that it was just anxiety/stress and my heart is fine. The whole ordeal was scary though. |

| The ambien stories are great...never had an issue with it myself.
I am amazed at how many people are having medical issues. Makes the random kidney stones and cysts seem so trivial that I have had to deal with. I think I am going to go running in the rain today to celebrate life! |

| Julie, stones (no matter how small) are no small matter. I had gall stones after having Hunter (caused by postpartum weightloss they said) and I had no clue what hit me. I was screaming in the ER like a crazy person thinking okay. This is it. I'm really gonna miss my family. And when the nurse asked me to rate the pain on a scale of 10 I was yelling 10! My husband told her, "She's had 2 babies with no drugs. If she says 10 it's pretty bad." A few morphine drips later all was fine.
I had a few more screaming attacks before I tried this random ancient Chinese remedy involving drinking literally 8 cups of pure olive oil (GAG!!!) and then some pure lemon juice. It actually worked. My Docs all said that surgery was the only option and were all shocked that the stones were gone after this oliveoil stint. Now I always question conventional medicine's rush to remove organs. I'd like to keep mine if there's some ancient Chinese torture that can do the trick! |

| Skyla, there are natural cures for almost everything. Pick up the book Natural Cures They Don't Want You To Know About by Kevin Trudeau. You have to get by his conspiracy paranoia, but it's a great book.
I developed acid reflux a few years ago. He recommended drinking Apple Cider Vinegar. I tried it and it works. I have to drink a tablespoon about every 3 months, but that's better than taking Prilosec every day! _________________ thanks for registering everyone, be sure to post and spread the word! |

| | David, question about osteonecrosis. I figure you are probably very well informed. My MIL had a hip replacement last year because of it, and FIL is having one in June because of it. My MIL has my husband all freaked out because she says that it is hereditary and all of the children will have to have hip replacements too. She is even starting an IRA for the hippie son to use for his future hip replacement. I have done some fairly extensive internet research, and can find absolutely nothing about it being hereditary. Was anything ever mentioned to you by a doctor that this might be a hereditary condition? |

| I am not sure which David you are referring this to; but being as I am the one who has had a hip replacement, I shall field your question.
..For lack of confusion in the future call me Dave or Slate..
I am by no means an expert and I mean no offence, but is your MiL demented? I think she is way over-reacting. I don't believe there is any scientific proof that it is hereditary. No one else in my family has had it. Is it possible? Sure. Should you start saving money for the procedure? No. I don't remember the Doctor saying anything to me about it being hereditary. And even if it were, that is not a guaranty your husband will have the same affliction. I think your MiL may be a little overwhelmed by both her and her husband having to go through it within a year. ..And God bless her. But hip replacements are very common in older people for various reasons. I don't think it is anything for you and your hubby to worry about, there are more pressing things in life to concern yourself with.
Hope that helps! . . |

| Thanks for the fast response Dave. That confirms everything I've read, but I figured I'd ask an expert. They both have one of the major risk factors, but no it couldn't be that, it's genetic, whatever. To answer your question, yes she is demented. Did I mention she is leaving my FIL all alone for his surgery and recovery because she doesn't want to spoil her 6 month vacation? Yeah, klassy. |

That guy is nuts - in a semi-helpful way. I checked out his books at the library, but you seem to have to join his online club to get the more detailed info. Did you do that? It's good info, but he charges you at very turn. I go to a naturopathic MD now. That way I can just let my insurance pay for the natural cures they don't want me to know about. |

| I didn't join any club, I bought the book second hand.
Naturopathic - is that one of those hippie doctors? I have a friend that goes to one and swears by him. I've been wanting to check it out. _________________ thanks for registering everyone, be sure to post and spread the word! |

| | The only kind of sickness we have encountered, was when our middle daughter was born. She was 3 weeks early and had 2 holes in her heart. She had to be seen by her heart doctor for the 1st year and take 2 kinds of heart med for it. The holes finally closed on their own. She didn't need surgery. We are SO happy that she didn't. I don't think I could stand to see my little baby having to have heart surgery! |
